At the end of the cold war, the native vietnamese thought they had freedom from japan. France is allowed to have a military base there. France is also allowed to have relations with vietnam. The native vietnamese do not like this! 1946 - start of war with french. Ho chi minh - leader of france. U. s. begins to see it as a war against communism. 1950 - u. s. begins to fund france in the war. 1954 - u. s. pays for 75% of france"s war effort. March 13, 1954 - dien bien phu. France doesn"t want to be in the war. North (communists) and south (forces backed by the french) vietnam. July 1956 - elections to be held to determine who will lead vietnam. Ngo dinh diem - called the elections off. He knows that he will lose the election. Domino theory - belief that communism in one country will spread to other countries.
