Document Summary
Neuroscience : study of the connections among the brain, mind, and behavior. Neurons: main parts of the central nervous system; receive and transmit info. Parts of a neuron: dendrites: receive info, soma: main cell body, axon: send info across neuron. Axon hillock is where it begins: myelin sheath: insulation, terminals: contain and send info. Node of ranvier space in between. Neurons connect dendrite to axons: but these do not touch , prevents false signals. Synapse: fluid filled space in between neurons through which messengers travel. Neurons communicate in two ways: electrical signals, chemical signals, dendrites > axon hillock> down axon > terminals > synapse > next. Neurons start at resting potential: baseline state around the axon, -70 mv, more negative particles inside neuron than positive. Positive particles are attracted and leak through gates : charge inside neuron becomes more positive. Neuron reaches threshold (this is an all or nothing response)
