Extremely difficult to define (prevalence, culture, societal norms) Can mean different things to different people. When a parent looks down upon a child and says what is wrong with you . Rejecting - doesn"t acknowledge child"s worth and needs. Saying this child is bad, isn"t worth it, doesn"t have needs that are worth fulfilling, etc. Isolating - isolates child from normal societal experiences, child is alone in world. Terrorizing - verbally assaults child, climate of fear, world is unsafe. Might ignore the fact that the child has to go to school. Corrupting - engages in antisocial behavior making child unfit for normal social experiences. When a parent does not believe the child, and the child feels invalidated and unheard. Powerlessness, lack of trust, feeling of fear and being unsafe. 6 years old and had been sexually abused by a cousin. Child told parent, parent did not believe.
