Corrections = society"s effort to punish and treat those who break the law and thereby protect the public. Local, state, federal, and private agencies manage the custody and treatment of offenders. For centuries, society dealt with crime and criminals with punishment alone. We did this in brutal, harsh, public manors. Workhouses - held a variety of people, including criminals and unemployed people. Colonial jails - the precursor to american prisons. Typically just ordinary house that had been transformed in purpose. Believed in the rehabilitation model - under the right circumstances, offenders could be changed. Work as a necessary (not for reform/training) Reflection - they will think on their sins . Key distinction: work for the private sector. Developed because of overcrowding in the new york city newgate prison. Latched onto the idea of working in solitary confinement, but the key distinction is that they made and distributed goods for the private sector. Rewarded people who were progressing in their reform.
