Racial and ethnic divisions have potential to disrupt society more than any other factor besides possible exception of social stratification. Vladimir lenin and josef stalin forged 1911 soviet union communist revolution. Lenin: racial divisions come from capitalist competition and inequality. Ethnic divisions go much deeper than economic systems. Outlawing nationalism and organized religion, totalitarian soviet union government limited racial and ethnic conflict. Capitalism does not cause ethnic conflict and communism will not cure it. Totalitarianism - dictatorial government with near complete control over citizens" behavior. When communism collapsed in ussr, racial/ethnic tensions still there. Race - set of biologically transmitted traits that became socially significant. Minority - people categorized by physical/cultural traits who are socially disadvantaged. Prejudice - attitudes biased for/against a category of people stemming from strong emotions. Social psychologists say we like people like ourselves. Racial prejudice is driven by fear and sometimes hate. Children are taught to distrust and/or fear strangers.
