Values cannot be rational - it"s just what you believe. Goal and means are not rational but rooted in emotion; follow feelings. Max weber wrote protestant ethic and the spirit of capitalism in response to marx"s dialectic materialism. Subjective meanings that human actors attach actions to. Spent most of his career writing against marx. Ideas and ideals change what people work on and how wealth is produced. Studying human society is different than rocks or animals because humans may understand one another and wonder why they are doing what they are. Get inside skin of people and know their deepest motives. Weber"s typology of human motives - reasons why humans do the things they do. Both the purpose and the means of behavior are rationally chosen. Most efficient way to get something done without possibly hurting others. Weberian rationality - efficiency, personal preferences are minimized, cold and calculating, perhaps inhumane.
