Sex-socially agreed upon biological criteria for classifying persons as females and males. Gender-social meaning of masculine/feminine; activities we engage in to meet social expectations of femininity and masculinity. Gender identity-a sense of ourselves as women, men, or gender-queer. Assumption= if you are male, you are masculine and are attracted to females: any deviation is considered abnormal, sociologists say the assumption is a social construct. Gender as a social structure: 3 levels: Doing gender theory-says we have to constantly perform and exhibit our gender, in order to accomplish that gender role. Moving away from individual to interactional analysis: ex. When a woman calls a tow truck, they are both reinforcing their gender roles by interactions: gender is not something we are, but something we have to do/perform .
