What is Ethnicity?
Ethnicity:
-Is a sense of historical, cultural, and sometimes ancestral connection to a group of
people who are imagined to be distinct from those outside the group.
-Ethnicity as a cultural construct

What is a Nation-State?
Nation State:
-A political entity, located within a geographic territory with enforced borders, where the
population shares a sense of culture, ancestry, and destiny as a people.
-Constructed, political entities
-Nation states do not always follow ethnic cohesion or divisions
-Impact of colonialism on people and states
(Berlin Conference 1884-1885)
-13 European countries participated
-Purportedly to facilitate trade and end slavery
-Effect was to reinforce and extend colonial control
-Early 1900’s → Nearly 90% of continent was under European control
