Enlarged extremities bc thickening of bones and soft tissues. Usually dx several years into the process bc changes in features. Liver and heart are enlarged- increased risk of death at a younger age. Growth hormone- don"t need to know norms. Insulin-like growth factor (igf-1)- more constant and better indicator that gh. Produced by liver when gh levels are high. Ogtt (oral glucose tolerance test)- to check for hyperglycemia. Mri or ct- looking for tumor on pituitary. Goal- bone growth stops and tissue enlargement is reversed. Visual changes get better, but visceral problems remain- heart, liver, dm. Surgical procedure to remove all or part of pituitary gland. Incision made in inner aspect of upper lip and gingiva.
