The purpose /purposes of these tests is/are to: confirm /date the pregnancy, evaluate fetal well-being (growth, movement, anomaly, etc, evaluate fetal age, diagnose congenital/genetic anomalies. Patients with previous problems with pregnancy or have other high risk conditions which predispose them to complications (diabetes, pre-eclampsia, chronic disease, rh issue). Patients who have a complication of pregnancy and/or need to delivery early. At about 7 months, count movement for 1-2 hours per day. Helps mom to be alert of fetal movement and to notify if not moving. Call hcp if < 10 movements in 3 hours, noticeable decrease, or nothing felt in the morning. Assessing fetal well-being and maturity: laboratory tests- offered in 1st trimester. Screening tests of maternal blood- if (+), not absolute diagnosis but rather increased likelihood. Follow up if not within normal limits: triple screen: (also known as multiple marker screen, afp plus) Afp (alpha fetoprotein): protein produced by fetus.
