Social connectedness: close relationship, support system, support network. ~40% of people who committed suicide directly indicated suicidal intent (from interviews with family, friends) Another 30% had talked about death or dying in preceding weeks or months. Prediction is difficult, even for highly trained professionals. Talking about death or suicide generally, or talking about plans: not everyone displays warning signs; prediction is very difficult. Difficult to study: cannot randomize to placebo-controlled trials, people with active ideation often excluded from rcts.
