There is no consensus definition of what abnormality is. Instead we look at clear elements of abnormality that all work together to contribute to how we define abnormality. None of the elements are sufficient on their own. Elements of abnormality: personal distress/suffering, maladaptiveness, deviancy, violation of societal standards, dangerousness to self and others. The dsm view on abnormality is (disturbance in behavior, cognitive function or emotion associated with clinically significant distress or impaired function. There is biological, psychological, or developmental dysfunction in the individual. ) Prevalance is the # of active cases in a population at a given time. Can be different time periods (point, one-year, lifetime) Incidence is the # of new cases in a population over a given period of time. Most of what we know about the prevalance of mental disorders come from the ncs and ncs-r which were large studies in the 90s and early 2000s.
