ENV 110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Basalt, Mafic, Intermediate Composition
Environmental Studies - Lecture 3
Global Change
• Plastic asthenosphere permits tectonic plate motion
• Star warm enough to warm Earth and atmosphere (habitable zone)
• Liquid is possible allowing weathering and erosion
• Biotic evolution continually modifies the biosphere
Earth System
• Four descriptions of change
▪ Gradual – time variable
▪ Catastrophic – extinction
▪ Unidirectional – Evolution of Earth or Formation of Moon, go forward and never
backwards
▪ Cyclic – Supercontinent cycle, works in a cycle
Supercontinent
• Plate tectonics drives continental movement
• Ocean basins open and close
Physical Changes
• Sea level +/- 300 meters
Layer of the Earth
• Deeper one goes; higher the temperature, higher the pressure
• Crust: thickest under Mount Range (40 miles), thinnest under mid-ocean ridge (4 miles)
