From 2013- 2015, an estimated 54.4 million US adults (22.7%) annually had ever been told by a doctor that they had some form of
arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, lupus, or fibromyalgia.
By 2040, an estimated 78 million (26%) US adults ages 18 years or older are projected to have doctor-diagnosed arthritis.
Of persons ages 65 or older, 49.6% ever reported doctor-diagnosed arthritis
Among all civilian, non-institutionalized US adults 23.7 million had both doctor-diagnosed arthritis and arthritis attributable activity
limitations in 2013-2015
Adults with arthritis were about 2.5 times more likely to have two or more falls and suffer a fall injury in the past 12 months
compared with adults without arthritis

• Osteoarthritis
o Damage to the silippery tissue that covers the ends of bones in the joint. This allows the
boens to rub together causing pain and stiffness
o Occurs most often in older people. You can get this diease after joint injuries
o Only effects the the joints and not the internal organs
o None spurs grow on the edges of the joint that eventually float inside the joint space a
causing more pain
o Cartilage rubs awy
o Develops gradually over several months or years
o Often in tip of the finger
o Mild morning stiffness
• Rheumatoid Arthritis
o Inflammatory condition in which your immune system attacks the tissues in your joins. It
causes pain and stiffness that worsen over several weeks or a few months
o Joit pai is’t always the first sig of RA. “oeties it begis like flu-like sytos of
fatigue, fever, weakness, and minor joint disease.
o Can appear in any joint
o Mornign stiffness lasts longer
• Gout
o Gout is a form of arthritis caused by excess uric acid in the bloodstream
o Gout most classicially affecs the joints in the base of the big toe
o Gout attacks often occur without warning in the middle of the night
o Related to increased incidence of cardiovascular and metabolic disease and can be
extreamely painful
o Most common form of inflammatory arthritis in men. Susceptible to women after
menopause
o Treated with medications: nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
• Fibromyalgia
o Widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, painful sensations by
affecting the way your brain processes pain signals. Cognitive difficulties
o Woman are more likely to develop fibromyalgia
o Genetic trait, can be triggered by infectiosn or physical trauma
o Serve stimulation change in the brain that involves an abnormal increase in levels of
certain chemicals I nthe brain.
o Brain develops memory of the pain and shows an increase of sensitivity to the stimulus.
