Birth to 2 child interacts with environment by manipulating objects; object permanence. 2 to 6 or 7 years thinking dominated by perception, but child becomes more capable of symbolic functioning. Developmental psychology: the study of our physical, cognitive, social and emotional changes throughout our whole lives, how we grow into who we are. Domains of development: physical (motor development, cognitive, social and emotional (facial expressions) What shapes development: physical environment, cultural beliefs, family and peers, neighborhoods and communities. Jean piaget: developmental psychologist noticed kids made particular mistakes that adults did not, humans go through specific stages of cognitive development and intellectual progression (qualitative, observational, longitudinal) Greatly i(cid:373)pacted educatio(cid:374): go to their level a(cid:374)d teach the(cid:373) there. Do(cid:374)"t ge(cid:374)eralize where they need/should be at a certain age or certain situation. Example: the distribution of juice between the subjects in class. Young looks at the level while older can distinguish volume.
