BIOL 140 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Nectar, Beltian Body, Population Control
Document Summary
Tree makes thorns to protect itself from mammals. Ants are predators and keep off other insects. Live in the tropics (life cycle contiguous all through the year) New leaves produced have orange bodies (beltian bodies) Bodies filled with animal-based proteins, fats and vitamins - insect prey for ant. Whole ant colony survives on this product of the tree. Habitat: in the winter, trees drops all their leaves (goes dormant) except for one green patch. This species can keep leaves year round because it has to keep its ant colonies. Four traits: thorns, beltian bodies, nectar, keeping leaves in the dormant season. Some enormous thorns on the tree host the queens. The most important thing for a seed to do is get its solar panels up so it can make more stuff.
