Oedipus in the odyssey odysseus runs in to jocasta (epicaste) in the underworld. Sophocles: the theban plays: oedipus the king (430 bc, oedipus at colonus (406 bc, antigone (441 bc) Tragic irony when the audience knows something that the characters do not. Lineage doesn"t know his own lineage, unaware of his past: trying to figure out the identity of the murdered king but also trying to figure out his own ideneity. Tiresias points out that oedipus does not see clearly. Sight and understanding are inversely proportional: when he understands his lineage he becomes blind. Oedipus becomes engaged in the action its b/c of the oracle. Oed should be humble in front of the oracle but he isn"t. Oracle doesn"t transmit the info to oed in a way he can understand. Wise, intelligent, well centered, saves the city, good ruler, subjects like him. Just trying to accept bad news and live his life. Overreached in his quest for knowledge and happiness.
