The iliadic presence in the second half of the aeneid: Vergil doesn"t make the odyssean or iliadic aeneid exactly systematic. Why does vergil reverse the normal order of odyssey and iliad in the aenead? (iliad poem takes place before odyssey) To raise questions: by not doing it the most natural way, shows audience that he can change up homer, violate him in egregious ways. There was a notion that homer knew all, vergil may have been aiming to go against this, that the aeneid was a comparable masterpiece. Invocation of muse book 7: savage warfare i"ll sing, invokes a specific muse. Arms and a man i sing iliad and odyssey. This is a higher story starting, a greater song for me-- moving from od to il. Gates of war- book 1-- jupiter predicts the gates will be closed forever. Gates of war- book 7-- juno opens the gates of war.
