Adrienne rich, compulsory heterosexuality and lesbian existence (1980) In the context of the feminist sex wars (cf. Understanding same sex female desire shouldn"t only be understood in a paradigm regarding gender, but it needs to be contextualized in terms of non-normative sexualities. Rich is understanding lesbianism as a gendered relationship instead of sexual desire. Reframing of lesbianism as a feminist practice and female bonding is a very important part of this moment/ establishing understanding of lesbianism within understanding lesbianism. Rich is influential in lesbian feminism related to each other/ bonded, but this understanding/ gendered practice that rubin is challenging in thinking sex. She argued for more broad definition of lesbianism, looking at earlier understandings of what lesbianism is (pornographic idea, sex practice, or lifestyle practice), she wants to argue that it"s more significant/ historically grounded/ broader/ has an inherent politics.
