Document Summary

Alternation of generations, parenchymatous growth, spores with sporopollenin. Egg fertilized on gametophyte, new sporophyte grows from gametophyte body supported nutionlly by the gametophyte. Sometimes called embryo and so plants are embryophytes. After fertilization *archegonium) the sporophyte develops on the gametophyte. Very different looking gametophytes, but still have the same life cycle and features of mosses. Vascular system - similar function to elevator, nutrients can go from bottom of the plant to the top and the top to the bottom (happens in sporophyte) Roots: complicated way for plant to grow. Small evergreen plants with true roots, and erect aerial stems, and small, scale like leaves (microphylls) Sporangia on reproductive leaves that are clustered in clonelike strobili at tips of stems, or scattered along stems. Plants are homosporous all spore types are the same size. Small gametophyte that is difficult to find in the wild. Spore all the same size: homospory (not male and female)
