BIO 262 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Climax Community, Biocoenosis, Secondary Succession
Document Summary
Reestablishment of biotic communities in an area where some type of biotic community is already present. Followed by return to climax community following disturbance. Occurs in an area where natural community disturbed, removed, destroyed soil or bottom sediment remains. More common type of succession may occur within weeks. Native oak and maple cleared by settlers. Huge tracts of land in ri & ne. Both primary and secondary succession characterized by increasing diversity within the communities. Descriptions of ecological succession usually focus on changes in vegetation. Characteristic wildlife may be associated with successional stages. Early successional species: rabbit, quail, dove, pheasant. As community structure changes during succession changes also occur: May be a cycle of succession in communities.
