A solution is de ned (usp) as a homogeneous liquid containing one or more chemical substances dissolved in a suitable solvent. it is a one phase system that is thermodynamically stable. A syrup is a concentrated aqueous solution containing sugar and/or sugar substitute. Aromatic waters- clear saturated solutions of volatile oils ( avor, vehicle) Mucilages- gum dispersed in liquids (like for band-aids) Puri ed water usp- obtained distillation or by ion exchange treatment. ph between 5 and 7. Water for injection (usp)- conforms to the same standards of puri ed water but is also free of pyrogens. Can be used in the preparation of injectable solutions collodians- (topical) pyroxylin in alcohol and water spirits- alcoholic or hydro-alcoholic solutions of volatile substances; 45-60% alcohol; eg; Tinctures, uid extracts, extracts- 15-80% alcoholic or hydroalcoholic. Drug in solution is more readily available for absolution (faster acting) appropriate for any age of patient they provide a palatable way to deliver unpleasant tasting drugs prep:
