Formed by a band of ectoderm thickening because of message received by the mesoderm. Neural fold is on each side of the groove. At the end of week 3, neural folds begin to fuse. As the tube closes, it separates from the ectodermal surface. Groups of cells from the crest of each neural fold (neural fold cells) separate from the neural tube. Hollow cavity inside the neural tube will later form the ventricular system of the brain. During the 4th week, the caudal part of the neural tube (comprised of spinal cord and brainstem) differentiates into 2 plates. Sulcus limitans - divides lateral wall of neural tube into 2 halves.
