Document Summary

Third ventricle: occupies the midline region of the diencephalon, the hole in the middle is formed by massa intermedia, thalamus and hypothalamus forms the wall, connects to the 4th ventricle via cerebral aqueduct traverses the midbrain. Fourth ventricle: between the cerebellum posteriorly and the pons and medulla anteriorly, 3 apertures in the 4th ventricle through which the ventricular system communicates with subarachnoid space. 2 lateral apertures: the median aperture is a hole in the inferior surface which empties into the subarachnoid space through cistern magna. Ventricles are developed in the center of the neural tube. Mean volume of csf in adults = 150 ml; 25 ml is contained within the ventricles and the rest occupies subarachnoid space. Circulation of csf: in the brain. Cisterns subarachnoid space around the spinal cord lumbar cistern moves back rostrally along the way, into the venous system through arachnoid villi. Functions of csf: csf in subarachnoid space.
