CMD 377 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Pupillary Light Reflex, Lateral Rectus Muscle, Superior Oblique Muscle
Document Summary
Motor nucleus for cn iii located in the midbrain oculomotor nucleus. Supplies the visceral motor component of the following muscles: pupillary sphincter: controls the size of the pupil, ciliary muscles: changes the shape of the lens (accommodation) The nucleus projecting to these muscles - edinger-westphal nucleus (preganglionic parasympathetic neuron: pupillary light reflex: constriction of pupil to light. Shining a light in one eye results in constriction of both pupils: accommodation reflex: reflex changes that enable an object to be focused on the retina. Supplies the superior oblique muscles: concerned with the downward movement of the eye (when in medial position) Cell bodies located in the contralateral trochlear muscles. Cn iv is the only cn that is: attached to the dorsal surface of the brainstem, completely crossed (originating from a contralateral nucleus) Damage to the nerve results in less significant deficit. Damage results in diplopia, when attempting to move eyes downward: difficulty in descending stairs and reading.
