CMD 454 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Language Delay, Hearing Aid, Cochlear Implant
Document Summary
Lots of viewpoints re: language acquisition and modes of communication. Current move toward family-centered approach, in all types of therapy: families are equal partners in language assessment, intervention, decision-making. Language: a set of symbols and rules established by a community to express meaning and facilitate communication (kretschmer & kretschmer, 1990) The deteriorated speech signal resulting from hearing loss robs the child of information regarding: form (phonology, syntax, morphology, content (semantics, use (pragmatics) = language delay: the primary consequence of hl. Children with hearing loss are not a homogeneous group when it comes to language acquisition. There are several predictors of early expressive language development: 3 key factors have been found to greatly impact speech and language outcomes for kids w/hl: increased client diversity, early intervention, availability of cochlear implants. A greater number of children are being identified with hearing loss before the age of 6 months due in large part to newborn hearing screening.
