Inability/difficulty in swallowing affects a person"s ability to eat. Eating has two purposes: nutrition and hydration, pleasure. A patient with dysphagia: is unable to consume enough food and liquid safely and efficiently, has impaired ability to participate in social gathering or events. Over the past 30 years, expanded services in medical settings and service to multidisabled children in the public schools led to increased management of dysphagia by slps. Slps are a key part of a dysphagia team because: communication and swallowing problems frequently co-occur because these two functions share some common structures and functions. Occurs before the food actually reaches the mouth. Marks the actual beginning of events that lead up to the swallow. Begins with the triggering of pharyngeal swallow. Two purposes of the pharyngeal stage: protect airway, direct the bolus toward the stomach. Begins with the loweirng and backward movement of the larynx and resumption of breathing.
