Hdf 201 - lecture 18 - aging: psychosocial crisis. Crisis - a critical time period in an individual"s development. Central process - individuals make sense of their surroundings by changing their self- concept. Allow an individuals to cope with life. Developed if a crisis is not solved. Developmental stage - a time period in an individual"s life. Developmental tasks - individuals learning required tasks during a particular time period. Age-graded expectations - tasks needed to be learned during a particular time period. Can relearn skills from previously completed stages. Stage 1: basic trust vs. mistrust (birth to one year old) Some mistrust is necessary too much is not healthy. Feeling that one can achieve their goals. Stage 2: autonomy vs. shame and doubt (2-3 years old) Parents need a balance between giving the child freedom and still having some restraint. Engaging in compulsive behaviors with little or no restraint. Feelings of willingness to pursue one"s goals.
