KIN 123 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Hans Selye, Autonomic Nervous System, Allostatic Load
Document Summary
Kin 123 - lecture 3 - stress - shabnam lateef. The nonspecific response of the body to any demand for change. Description of the physical or emotional reaction. Non-specific: not knowing what may cause it. Positive or negative situations can cause stress. Stress evolved as a way of preparing the body to respond to a challenge. Primitive response- started because of the need to survive. Hans selye came up with the term gas to explain stress in stages. Stage 2: resistance- stressor is still present and body adjusts to function under stress (coping) Stage 3: exhaustion- body reaches peak ability to deal with the stressor, body function deteriorates and has a risk of developing an illness. In response to stressful situations: physical & behavioral changes occur. Sweating, nausea, heart rate increases, blood pressure increases. Sympathetic- helps prepare the body for fight or flight . Parasympathetic- helps you relax and returns back to the body"s homeostasis.
