Document Summary

A dash is also used to introduce an attributive. An attributive in a dialogue credits the speech to the person who said it. It refers to a verb or action associated with speaking and who said it. Again, the dash is joined to first letter of the first word. Also notice how that first word, normally a (cid:862)speaki(cid:374)g(cid:863) (cid:448)er(cid:271) starts (cid:449)ith a lo(cid:449)er(cid:272)ase letter. No(cid:449) let"s look at (cid:271)oth parts joi(cid:374)ed together: the spee(cid:272)h a(cid:374)d the attri(cid:271)uti(cid:448)e. There is no period (full stop) at the end of the first part since it is continued by an attributive. We can only put a question mark, an explanation mark or ellipsis (three dots) in the speech part when it is followed by an attributive. See how there is a space between what is being said and the dash that is joined to the attributive. Re(cid:373)e(cid:373)(cid:271)er, the speaker"s attri(cid:271)uti(cid:448)e (cid:271)egi(cid:374)s (cid:449)ith a lo(cid:449)er(cid:272)ase letter.
