ANTH 316gm Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Dennis Banks, Third Great Awakening
Document Summary
Thousands of people living on reservations without a viable means of lively hood. Were basically prisons, were not allowed to leave. Us government trying to support this amount of people. A lot of the money allocated for native americans actually never reached them. Third great awakening = still with us to a great degree. Impacted way people were looking at native american cultural practices. Renewed interest in demonizing native american cultural practices. It didn"t last very long, dropped when ww2 started. After ww2, america entered nostalgic period -> baby boom. Pueblo groups had a city state ideology where each were a self governing unit, did a better job of resisting. This could have influenced john collier"s idea of how to set up. Didn"t make sense for some groups like cherokee. Fdr"s new deal which increased government involvement to help people. Actually got some land back to native american groups, set up legal structures, accomplished a fair amount.
