Biocompatiblity: no toxic or undesired effects; fda regulation. Crosslinking in presence of cells; crosslinking reaction must have no effect on cell viability or protein bioefficacy. Mechanical properties: tune using polymer conc. , mesh size, porosity, crosslink density. Mass transport: continuous exchange of nutrients, proteins, gases, and waste into and out of and within the hydrogel. Target microenvironment: mimicks the nature of the ecm. Matrix metalloproteinase (mmp) can cleave components of the extracellular matrix resulting in increased space for cell or tissue movement.
