Document Summary

It is thought that of new human diseases come from other animals: hantavirus, hiv, and ebola. Some diseases used to be limited to killing villages but now can kill more people because of travel. Travel, blood transfusion, sex, and iv drugs all contribute to a disease becoming an epidemic. Tumorviruses: retrovirus, papovavirus, adenovirus, and herpesvirus: appear to cause cancer, may only cause cancer with other mutagenic events, transform cells into cancer cells after integration of viral nucleic acid into host. May carry oncogenes that trigger cancerous characteristics. Plant viruses decrease crop yields and plant growth: spread by: Viroids are smaller and simpler than viruses: tiny, naked, circular rna, nu(cid:272)leotides do(cid:374)"t (cid:272)ode for protei(cid:374)s. Can be replicated by host: disrupt plant metabolism and stunt plant growth. Prions- proteins that spread disease: cause degenerative brain disease, misfolded form of a normal brain protein, alzhei(cid:373)er"s, parki(cid:374)so(cid:374)"s, a(cid:374)d (cid:373)ay(cid:271)e als, can convert normal proteins into prions.
