Bisc 220: cellular cytoskeleton, microtubules are structural components of cilia and flagella, cilia and flagella are covered by the cell"s plasma membrane, flagella are usually longer than cilia, and cells that have them usually have one or two. Cilia are present in great numbers. i. ii. iii. The important part of cilia and flagella structure are the microtubule formation. All along the longitudinal length of the cilia are microtubules. These are attached in a radial formation to a basal body. There are nine pairs radiating out from the basal body and two in the middle. Cross-wise, there are motor proteins which are connected to both the inner microtubules and the radiating ones. To move the cilium around, these, when triggered by atp allow the cilium to bend backwards and forwards: the principle behind the movement is the idea of motor proteins.
