O"keefe, moser, & moser: awarded 2014 nobel prize in physiology/medicine. Gps neurons that idenify your locaion from grid cells and place cells. Tests spaial memory - looking for a hidden plaform o. Can swim straight towards the plaform based on contextual cues. Where memories are stored, required for locaional memory, learning. Wild type mouse (with normal hippocampus) will spend more ime searching for the plaform in the correct quadrant than a mutant mouse if the plaform is moved. Place cells: encode posiions in space (moving around rooms without bumping into furniture at night) 1970s: o"keefe experimented with mice, recorded where in the room when each place cell was acivated. Adjacent cells don"t necessarily map to adjacent locaions - cogniive vs topological. Hm: hippocampus was removed to stop his epilepsy, but could not form new memories (anterograde amnesia), could remember everything before surgery.
