Week twelve, lecture eleven: genre the modernist period: modernism (1963-1976, affected all the arts a media throughout the 20th century, modernism is the most salient determination on genre in this period, other determinations: television, the avant-garde, counterculture. Painting moved from representational to abstract to surrealism: music tonality to atonality and dissonance, musical theater from rogers and hammerstein to sondheim, drama from psychological-sociological realism to absurdity. Literature from social realism to stream of consciousness: modernism started at the turn of the 20th century, resurfaced after wwii, the late-1950s in the u. s. in cinema. All the european movements based on modernism (see previous list). It"s still with us today: most filmmakers only used elements, some were pure modernist . The basic tenets of modernism: thematically: self-conscious engagement with social and moral values. Self-consciously engages with social norms/values/the status quo in order to subvert it. The film knows and questions these norms; and the audience knows it.
