PSYC 301L Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Long-Term Memory, Free Recall
Document Summary
Ways of getting things into long term memory: Not transferred to long term memory: elaborative rehearsal. Uses meaning and connections to transfer into long term memory. Levels of processing theory- memory depends on how things are encoded: depths of processing. Deep processing better memory: experiment: physical features (whether or not the word is in capitals) vs. rhyme vs. fill in the blank. 1st group (physical features) had the worst memory, 3rd group (fill in the blank) had the best memory. Problem: can"t know how deeply individuals are processing each word, circular reasoning. Other factors that aid in encoding: visualization, paired-association learning. Experiment: group a repeated word pairs and group b visualized word pairs. Group b had better memory than group a when presented with the first word in the word pair. Self-reference effect- memory is better if asked to link word to self. Occurs even if the word is unrelated to you.
