Document Summary

Ssci lecture 28 industrial ecology: the science and technology of sustainability. As cities generate waste, turn them into resources that feed back into city. Ne(cid:449) (cid:272)o(cid:374)(cid:272)ept of te(cid:272)h(cid:374)ology"s role: old concept: industrial system independent of natural system, new concept: technology sits within the natural system. Industrial ecology: optimize total material cycle from raw material, to finished, to product, to obsolete product, to ultimate disposal, optimize resources, energy, & capital. Systems view of ie at 3 scales: firm or products level. Pollution prevention before product is even finished. Make it so the processes live off one another. A type i ecosystem: unlimited resources unlimited waste (no recycling) A type ii ecosystem: energy & limited resources limited waste (some recycling, only this type *actually exists, some intrafirm, interfirm, and intersector linkages. A type iii ecosystem: energy nearly zero waste, all system types require energy, all result in eventual degradation/dissipation of materials.
