Industrial ecology: optimize total material cycle from raw material, to finished, to product, to obsolete product, to ultimate disposal, optimize resources, energy, & capital. Systems view of ie at 3 scales: firm or products level. Pollution prevention before product is even finished. Make it so the processes live off one another. A type i ecosystem: unlimited resources unlimited waste (no recycling) A type ii ecosystem: energy & limited resources limited waste (some recycling, only this type *actually exists, some intrafirm, interfirm, and intersector linkages. A type iii ecosystem: energy nearly zero waste, all system types require energy, all result in eventual degradation/dissipation of materials.
