SSCI 165Lgw Lecture 7: Week 7 Notes
Document Summary
Water is a key resource for restoring nature in the city. Systems include water provisioning, flood control, and water treatment. Cities often found near bodies of water. Romans knew how to bring it large distances through ritual baths and public supplies. A lot stored as ice and permanent snow, a sliver in surface water (drives limit of freshwater) Land area that feeds into a given [group of] rivers/streams. Amount of runoff depends on filtration aspects: 100% impervious yields 85% run off, 15% intercepted by streets, buildings and roofs. Leads to big flood risk and less groundwater recharge. Restore: water and habitat quality so that it simulates original conditions. Balance constructed wetlands with existing flood control infrastructure to keep water around longer in key places. Recharge: groundwater by capturing stormwater runoff and other usable water. Reduce volume and runoff rate, increase percolation into more permeable surfaces.
