May the bridges i burn light the way. Indictment- a formal document that this defendant committed the crime. The grand jury decides if there is a probable cause. Plea bargaining- almost every plea ends guilty so the lawyer tries to get the person the least amount of time. your lawyer starts doing this for you as soon as they get your case. Then, you go to trai (either bench or jury trial). You still have the presumption of innocence and the right to a fair trial. If found guilty, the judge will give you how much time you"re going to spend in jail, if you get probation, etc. You have the right to a jury trial but not the right to a bench trial. Someone can request to not have a jury trial and this can be allowed based on the case. Then, you meet with people from the correctional office (wardens, nurses, probation lawyers).
