Initially evolved in 1890s in reaction gilded age urban explosion. Reflects (perceived) expansion of american middle class and prevalence of a mass consumption-driven postwar economy. Education of veterans initiated no later than two years after discharge. Loans for the purchase or construction of homes, farms, and business property. Veterans were given allowances like being able to buy a house with no money down. Provides opportunity for college and the government would pay for tuition, lodging, etc. Truman wins election in 1948; doesn"t run for re-election in 1952 after. Fair deal expansion of new deal reform: wanted to maintain government"s oversight of economy in postwar period. Continued containment strategy for cold war, justified by domino theory logic. Was wary about military power in the us and huge defensive establishment. Households beginning to become a 2nd car family . Interstate highway and defense system act of 1956. Saved up wwii salaries + great depression memories.
