BIOL 118 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Microorganism, Parasitism, Railways Act 1921
Document Summary
Likelihood of host dying is high therefore microbe dies with it (low) If its high, host can be killed quicker to jump hosts quicker (high) Knows via natural selection (how evolution works) Ability to withstand a pathogen is resistance. Resistance can be passed but immunity can"t. Have ability to get past host defense mechanisms. To extract nutrients fr bodies to repro/grow pop. Pathogen: parasite capable of causing disease in a host. Any pathogen has invasive properties that enable to overcome host defenses. Host: any organism that harbors another organism. Infection: the growth of a parasite within or on a host. Disease: disturbance or disruption in the host that results in diminished heal and usually involves tissue damage. Pathogenicity: ability to infect & cause disease* Virulence: measure of the intensity of pathogenicity. Symbiosis: an association of two or more organisms that can be any of three types of relationships. Commensalism +/-; one member benefits while the other is unaffected.
