BIOL 118 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Plasmodium Falciparum, Apicomplexan Life Cycle, Plasmodium
Document Summary
Msp 1 is an antigen (allows immune system targeting) & coat protein that allows merozoite to attach to red blood cell. Msp 1 is a function that allows merozoite gain entry to rbc. Immune system exploits msp 1 (bc its on outside surface) using it to recognize it to fight it. Temperature cycles in patients with diff infection to diff species of malaria * Protein (made by p. falciparum once it gets inside the red blood cell, then puts it on surface) Made only when plasmodium is inside red blood cell* Last thing plasmodium wants is to go to spleen. Can bind to inside surface of blood vessel. Gets stuck rather than circulating throughout the body. Then puts it on surface of infected rbc. Protein can cause uninfected blood cells and stick to cause rossetting. Makes it hard for phagocyte dendritic cell. Makes it hard for innate & adaptive immune system to find it.
