1798, fight over slavery in mississippi territory. Slavery being abolished in ny and nj. 1807, congress abolish the transatlantic slave trade. Northerners feel like they are being used by the south. Constitution said slavery cannot be touched until 1808. 1819, missouri asks for statehood as a slave state. 1815, even number of slave and free states. Maine is about to enter as a free state. Slave owners want mo as slave state to grow hemp. Fear if mo is not a slave state then the rest of la purchase will not be allowed to become slave states. Maine will enter union as free state to maintain sectional balance. Slavery is prohibited in all remaining la purchase territory north of 36"30". Temporary fix and gurantees slavery will expand westward in the south. By 1855, no economic barriers to voting anymore. Before, only landowing (rich) males could vote voted for other rich candidates. Opens the vote to many more white males.
