Review and notices: starting friday, class will focus on arguments as the main object studied in logic. Last class we discussed conditionals (if___ then ___: questions from page 13 after exercise 1. 1 (genus/species) will be on the test. Lecture on section 3: propositions are similar to sentences, but are more abstract, many sentences can express the same proposition synonyms, passive v. active voice, ex: stealing is a crime. Two di erent propositions, di erent idea (sin is di erent from crime): ex: it was a tense moment. If not, there are two propositions: dead metaphor: metaphors used so often that their meaning becomes literal. Kim is not dealing with a full deck of cards: although a metaphor, it is so often used that it is understood as a literal term. I live in a house: the house is red, no meaning is changed vs. original, both are asserted in original sentence, ex: i believe that today is friday.
