Deviance: the recognized violation of a cultural norm: doesn"t have to be bad/evil/wrong, just a violation of a norm. Norms: rules and expectations by which a society guides the behavior of its members. Crime: anything that constitutes an offense that may be prosecuted by the state and is punishable by law. Evidence suggests that men commit more crimes than women. Peak age of criminals is 18 or 19 - with the exception of rape. 45% of inmates in california are mentally ill. 57 million people in the us have mental illness - not a proportional representation. Sociologists believe crime is social rather than biological or psychological. Emile durkheim: structural functionalist - deviance is necessary. 4 functions of crime and deviance: affirms cultural values and norms, responding to deviance clarifies moral boundaries, responding to deviance promotes social unity, deviance encourages social change. Social integration: how well you are integrated into your social group or community.
