First move advantage: being up one turn gives significant advantage. Static resource games: players have access to all pieces from the outset of the game. Developed resource games: players build up resources over time. Build into game tools that allow fine-tuning how to create the starting player handicap. Build in metrics into the game to observe first move advantage. Be aware that first move advantage increases over time. First move advantage is not only present in turn based games but in any pvp game with turn based elements. Keeps an evolving state of play keeps any one play style from being definitively correct. Players find ways to counter those better than average which players counter again. No matter how skilled the player is, the character can"t be great at everything. Have a firm knowledge of how pieces interact and what beats what.
