ANT 304 Lecture Notes - Lecture 24: Hammerstone, Lithic Reduction, Knapping
Document Summary
Used for pressure flaking: basal grinding makes edges of tools smooth so when twine was tied around it the edge would not cut it, basal thinning helps the shaft not split. This is an example of the flute in spear heads. If the base is thick, then the shaft has a higher chance to be split further down. If it is thinner, the shaft will only split a little: a tool is biface if it has flaking on both sides, a uniface tool will have flaking on only one side, percussion flaking is done with billet/hammerstone. Take a large stone and remove flakes. They were used to make large and thin flakes. Hammerstone was basically a stone used as a hammer. It was used for large and thick flakes. If a tool is trimmed at an end and flat on the bottom, it is a scraper.
