ANT 325L Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: American Exceptionalism, Individualism, Haredi Judaism
Document Summary
Focus of the day: discussing american national culture and then using that skill to discuss israeli national culture. Does exist in some ways but it"s difficult to reach a consensus. The belief that america is the best country in the world, whether you think it"s absolutely perfect or you think your right to state it"s faults (freedom of speech) is what makes it great. Diversity: we all can agree the country is diverse doesn"t mean we all like it. It"s accepted to be busy all the time, even competitively. The idea of *not* doing anything during the day is frowned upon. Republican / democratic divide: we are party centric as opposed to issue-centric. Affects a lot of things in the state. Outspoken and blunt individuals: would probably hurt american"s feelings. In some ways it"s been like this since the beginning of the state, but even more so since the silicon valley was developed.
