ANT 302 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Ethnography
Document Summary
The performance of cultural values and social identities in space and time. The ethnographic method: concrete, statistical documentation of the organization of the tribe and the anatomy of the culture, minute, detailed observation of the imponderabilia of actual life and of typical behavior, a corpus inscriptionum. An action that is able to be experienced. Procedure: preservation, ensures a desirable outcome. An event in which beliefs, values, identities, states of being, and other intangible elements of social and cultural life- the very things that make up the natives point of view - become particularly palpable or experience-able. Immaterial cultural values, beliefs, identities, and so on are dramatically manifested. Moments where, participants in the here-and-now, come into contact with more fundamental social and cultural realities. Involve the manifestation in time and space of significant, but often intangible elements of social and cultural realities. There are respective rituals that give meaning and significance to each space of the house: demarcations of space.
